Tunnels in Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are connected by an intricate network of sub-sea tunnels, each serving as a vital link and reducing travel time between these captivating islands.

Vágatunnilin:
Stretching over 4.9 kilometers and reaching depths of 150 meters below sea level, Vágatunnilin has been a key link between Vagar Airport and the capital Tórshavn since its opening in 2002.

Norðoyartunnilin:
Linking Borðoy with Eysturoy island, Norðoyartunnilin has served as a crucial link since its opening in April 2006, improving overall transportation efficiency by connecting the northern islands.

Eysturoyartunnilin:
A true marvel with its iconic roundabout, Eysturoyartunnilin connects Streymoy with the two sides of Eysturoy island. With a length exceeding 11 kilometers and depths plunging to over 180 meters, this sub-sea tunnel, inaugurated in December 2020, stands among the world’s longest.

Sandoyartunnilin:
The most recent addition to the network, Sandoyartunnilin, which opened in June 2023, strategically links Streymoy island with the southern Sandoy island.
